Columbus Dance Theatre Announces its 20th Season:

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season, Columbus Dance Theatre will look back at two decades of groundbreaking artmaking while always keeping an eye to the future.

“It almost seems impossible.” says CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach.  “Twenty years ago I had a dream of fostering a dance company where I could explore my choreographic vision, my personal vantage point on artmaking.  And, I wanted to secure the future of dance in our community through a high-level training school for aspiring dancers.  Sometimes, dreams do come true.”

CDT@20, Columbus Dance Theatre’s twentieth anniversary season, will celebrate the Company’s history in dramatic ways engaging the community at large in fresh, exciting year of new dances and returning favorites .  The season opens as it does each year with Dancers Making Dances at CDT’s Fisher Theatre the weekend of October 13th and 14th featuring new works made by Company dancers for each other. December brings the 18th year of CDT’s beloved ballet Matchgirl at the Lincoln Theatre featuring full orchestra and choir conducted by Jason Hiester.  CDT’s crowd pleasing production of A-Z will excite audiences in February.  This unique program where the audience participates in the creation of a new dance created on the spot by Tim Veach is a CDT favorite and features live music by jazz pianist Bradley Sowash.  March brings the return of the Columbus Dances Fellowship concert. This free concert, made possible through funding from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, features works of five choreographers selected from the community and celebrates new choreography in Columbus.

The season culminates with CDT@20 presented by PNC Arts Alive and Columbus Dance Theatre.  This culminating concert will engage our audience in ways we have never done before.  “It is going to be so exciting.” says Veach.  “Through funding from PNC Arts Alive we are offering four separate repertoires on one weekend at the Lincoln Theatre as we look back at the long history of the scores of dances created at Columbus Dance Theatre.”

Columbus Dance Theatre’s beloved holiday classic Matchgirl returns for its 18th year – a highlight of the Columbus Holiday Season! This timeless tale written by Hans Christian Andersen was created as CDT’s annual family ballet more than a decade ago by CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach. It continues to move Columbus audiences with its poignant message of forgiveness, hope, and joy. CDT is pleased to continue its collaboration with the Department of Music of Ohio Wesleyan University for the production.  “Associate Professor of Music Jason Hiester serves as our conductor for the production and has assembled a terrific ensemble of singers and instrumentalists for Matchgirl,” says Veach.  “The music for Act I of the ballet features various works by Aaron Copland, and the music for Act II is John Rutter’s Magnificat.”

A-Z is a CDT favorite where audiences are a part of making the dance! Twenty six dance phrases, A-Z, will be shown to the audience who will vote for their favorite phrases on score cards.  As well, 3 different musical selections will be offered by Columbus jazz pianist Bradley Sowash from which the audience can vote for their favorite.  At the intermission the votes are tallied and the second act of the concert is an “on the spot” creation of a new dance by CDT Artistic Director Tim Veach using the phrases and music chosen by the audience.

“Our audiences love this concert,” says Veach.  “It is always a big hit.  I think people enjoy the ‘behind the scenes’ look into how a choreographer creates a dance.  There is also an element of danger and unpredictability.  Nobody really knows what is going to happen. That is the fun of it.  As ever, we are committed to live music as part of this presentation and are thrilled to have Bradley Sowash joining us at the piano for this one of kind performance experience.”

CDT, in partnership with the Greater Columbus Arts Council, hosts an annual concert of dances chosen from the local dance community with funding provided by GCAC. Five fellowships of $2000 each are awarded to choreographers through an adjudication process each fall. The five dances chosen are then presented in an innovative and exciting concert free to the public at CDT’s Fisher Theatre.  “We love this partnership with GCAC that enables us to support fresh new choreographic talent in our vibrant dance community,” says Veach. “That this concert is free to the public is a wonderful aspect of this event celebrating new dance.”

CDT@20, presented by PNC Arts Alive and Columbus Dance Theatre, is the culminating retrospective concert celebrating the wide range of repertoire created by Columbus Dance Theatre over the past twenty years.  Musical guests will include The Carpe Diem String Quartet and RJD2 for four separate performances held over one festival style weekend.  Repertoire for these concerts will be chosen on-line by the community and shared through free pop-up performances leading up to this one-of-a-kind celebration of dance in Columbus. "We will be taking a look back at every dance ever made at CDT during the past twenty year," says Veach. "The public will then vote on their favorites and out of that voting will announce the repertoire.  I really can't wait for this one."
