Columbus Dance Theatre will be offering the following classes this year:

Toddler Ballet (Age 2-early 3)

Creative Movement (Ages 3 to 4)

Pre Ballet (Ages 4 to 5)

Ballet I (Ages 5 to 6)

Ballet II (Ages 6 to 7)

Ballet III (Ages 8+)

Male Identifying Scholarship (5+ and held at our Downtown location)

Ballet I/II/III Open Jazz/Contemporary/Hip hop*

*To be eligible for this open class, students must be enrolled in Ballet I or Ballet II

Dancers ages 10 and up are eligible to join our Intensive Training Program with permission from the Artistic Director. Please email us for more information.

All families must also purchase the $30 annual registration fee to reserve your child’s spot. One fee per family needed (not per child)

Young Children’s Division Classes

YCD Toddler Ballet

age 2-early 3

1 day a week for 30 Minutes

This fun class geared for children aged 2-early 3 and meets once a week for 30 minutes at our Bexley Location. Your child will learn the fundamentals of dance, listen to music, use their imagination and learn how to work with others all while learning and playing!

Dress Code for Toddler Ballet:

Girls: Skin tone tights, pink leotard, skin tone ballet shoes (optional detachable pink skirt). Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

YCD Creative Movement

AGES 3-4

1 day a week for 45 Minutes

Our Creative Movement classes are introductory dance classes for our younger students. These classes bring children into a child-centered environment for movement. Children in these classes are introduced to basic movement concepts and how to orient themselves in a dance class. They also participate in self-generated movement as well as beginning to learn basic ballet vocabulary.

Dress Code for Creative Movement:

Girls: Skin tone tights, light blue leotard, skin tone ballet shoes (optional detachable pink or black skirt). Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.


YCD Pre-Ballet

ages 4-5

1 day a week for 1 hour

As it sequences out of Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet retains the developmental aspect of self-generated movement and the use of imagination to learn basic dance concepts. This course also moves past the Creative Movement curriculum to initiate fundamental ballet principals. Basic positions and facings are introduced from a movement-based perspective. 

Dress Code for Pre-Ballet:

Girls: Lavender tank or camisole leotard, skin tone tights, and skin tone ballet shoes. Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

YCD Ballet I

AGES 5-6

1 days per week for 1 hour 15 minutes

Ballet I begins the ballet sequence of the curriculum. Basic barre work, proper placement, ballet etiquette, center combinations of allegro (jumping) patterns and simple series of patterned steps and vocabulary are introduced. 

Dress Code for Ballet I:

Girls: Burgundy tank or camisole leotard, skin tone tights, and skin tone ballet shoes. Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

*NEW THIS YEAR:

Optional Jazz/Contemporary/Hip hop class! Join us on Thursday evenings to take one hour of another artform! Classes will rotate between Jazz, Contemporary, and hip hop. Students must be enrolled in the regular Ballet I or II level to enroll.

Dress Code for Ballet I Jazz/Contemporary/Hip hop:

Girls: Any color leotard, black footless tights or leggings. Hair pulled back into a ponytail or bun.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

Footwear for all:

Jazz-Black jazz shoes

Contemporary/Modern- Barefoot or socks

Hip hop - Black jazz shoes


YCD ballet II

ages 6-7  

2 days per week for 1 hour 30 minutes

Ballet II is geared for students ages 6-7 who are ready to take on more of a time commitment to dance and technical training. At this level, students begin to mirror the training principals of the Ballet III and Intensive Training Program. At this level, it is mandatory that students attend both classes throughout the week.

Dress Code for Ballet II:

Girls: Navy tank or camisole leotard, skin tone tights, and skin tone ballet shoes. Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

*NEW THIS YEAR:

Optional Jazz/Contemporary/Hip hop class! Join us on Thursday evenings to take one hour of another artform! Classes will rotate between Jazz, Contemporary, and hip hop. Students must be enrolled in the regular Ballet I or II level to enroll.

YCD ballet III

ages 8+  

3 days per week

Ballet III begins to mirror the training principals of the Intensive Training Program by focusing on broader ballet vocabulary while also introducing students to work in other dance forms (Jazz Technique and Contemporary). Ballet III can serve as an entry level class for the School if a student has prior dance experience or is older than the recommended age for the course. 

Dress Code for Ballet III:

Girls: Black tank or camisole leotard, skin tone tights, and skin tone ballet shoes. Hair should be put into a neat bun. If hair is too short to put up, it should be clipped and pulled back away from the face.

Boys: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.

Jazz: Black or colored leotard, footless black tights, leggings, or jazz pants, black jazz shoes, black jazz shorts (optional)

Contemporary: Black or colored leotard, footless black tights or leggings, socks

ages 5+  

1 days per week for 1 hour

In an effort to encourage the development of men in dance CDT offers a Boy’s Ballet Class. Classes are taught by CDT’s Artistic Director, Company or Apprentice men. Classes consist of ballet and fitness training. This class meets once a week at our Downtown location, 592 E. Main Street.

Dress Code for Boy’s Ballet: Black tights, black or white shoes, white socks, white fitted shirt, dance belt - for boys ages 9 and older.


Meet the YCD Director, Erika Alloway

Erika Alloway began her dance training at Dance Centre North and the Center for Ballet and Dance Arts in Syracuse, NY, and is a graduate of BalletMet Columbus' Pre-Professional and Professional Trainee Programs under the direction of Gerard Charles. Erika is thrilled to be returning to CDT for her ninth season as a company member, a teacher in the ITP and YCD Program, the Young Children's Division Director and Company Manager.
